Planned Improvements

Bethany Home Road Traffic Interchange improvements

  • Description: Construct a half-diamond interchange at Loop 101 and Bethany Home Road with northbound Loop 101 entrance ramps and southbound exit ramps. Note: the southern half of the interchange was completed in August 2006.

  • Schedule: Construction began in September 2006 and was completed in August 2007.

Union Hills Traffic Interchange improvements/Beardsley Road Connector

  • Schedule: Construction began in early 2010 and is scheduled to be completed in late 2011, with major elements of the project open to traffic between late 2010 and mid-2011.
  • Project Summary: The project includes improvements to the Loop 101 interchange at Union Hills Drive to improve traffic flow, as well as new freeway access at Beardsley Road.

Planned improvements include widening the Union Hills bridge over Loop 101 to allow three through lanes in each direction and constructing a sidewalk on both sides of the bridge.  On the east and west approaches there will also be three through lanes and storage for the dual left turn lanes with right turn lanes for the Loop 101 on-ramps. The northbound off-ramp will be widened to accommodate additional traffic.

The project includes a new one-way southbound frontage road along Loop 101 from 75th Avenue to Union Hills Drive that will connect with a new combined southbound Loop 101 off-ramp at Beardsley Road/Union Hills Drive and a new combined southbound on-ramp at 75th Avenue/Beardsley Road. The southbound on-ramp at 75th Avenue and the southbound off-ramp at Union Hills Drive will be reconfigured to provide access to Beardsley Road. Additionally the project will add a u-turn bridge to provide a new on-ramp from Beardsley Road to northbound/eastbound Loop 101.

The project also includes widening Beardsley Road between 81st and 83rd avenues and a portion of Lake Pleasant Parkway at 83rd Avenue, constructing a roundabout at 81st Avenue, trail improvements at New River and other miscellaneous improvements.

The project will reduce congestion and improve safety and traffic flow at the 75th Avenue and Union Hills Drive interchanges, and will also enhance Loop 101 access in the northwest Valley.

The Arizona Department of Transportation is managing construction of the improvements, with the cooperation of the cities of Peoria and Glendale. The $20.6 million combined improvements are funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, Federal Surface Transportation Program, MAG Proposition 400 regional funds and the city of Peoria.
