Project Overview

The Maricopa Regional Supplemental Noise Walls project consists of the design and construction of 10 walls within Phoenix, Peoria, Scottsdale and Maricopa County.

The Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG), in collaboration with its member jurisdictions, identified 10 locations within the Valley's freeway system where regional supplemental noise-mitigation walls will be built using voter-approved (2004) Proposition 400 funds. MAG advanced this project and referred it to ADOT for design and construction. The study that identified these locations was completed by MAG in June of 2008.

The walls will be constructed in heights ranging from five-to-20 feet, depending on needs at each location. It is anticipated that the walls will match the material type used on adjacent walls or on existing walls where additional height will be required.

These are the general locations of the 10 noise walls. Select a wall location to download the fact sheet (NOTE: There is not a Wall #1):

2009–Late 2010:   Design
2011 Mid-2012:  Construction

Simultaneous construction of multiple walls at multiple locations is planned. Each wall could take as long as six months to complete. However, construction of the larger, or multi-phase walls, could extend beyond six months.

When construction begins, crews will work 8-10 hour shifts beginning at 5:00 or 5:30 a.m., Monday through Friday unless otherwise specified by city ordinance. Some occasional night and weekend work is possible.

The construction process will likely require traffic restrictions and/or detours on freeway lanes, on- and off-ramps, surface streets and multi-use paths which might impact motorists and pedestrians. Short-term impacts to area landscaping and community paths are expected throughout the project.

ADOT is committed to providing construction information to stakeholders and welcomes your comments and feedback. For further information and to request weekly project updates, call the project hotline at 1-855-712-8530 or email valleyfreeways@azdot.gov.

The Maricopa Regional Supplemental Noise Walls project was funded through the half-cent sales tax under the voter-approved Proposition 400.  Extra funding from the Quiet Pavement Prevention Pilot program, funded through Prop. 400, allowed for the opportunity to build these supplemental noise walls.
