ADOT is committed to keeping the public informed of upcoming closures with as much notice as possible.
Beginning Feb. 16, eastbound US 60 (Grand Avenue) will be closed nightly between Loop 101 and 99th Avenue until Feb. 20 to install girders to widen the bridge over New River. The Loop 101 ramps will not be affected. More information about the closure and detour routes will be provided in next week's construction alert.
The second phase of the Grand Avenue widening project, which will add a third lane in each direction on a 10-mile stretch of Grand Avenue between Loop 303 and 99th Avenue, has begun. Construction activity is occurring on the western portion of the project between Loop 303 and Bell Road, as well as on the eastern portion to install three sound walls between 99th and 111th avenues on the south side of Grand Avenue. All sound walls are expected to be completed this spring.
This segment of the Grand Avenue widening project is expected to be completed in late 2011. The first phase of the Grand Avenue widening project between 99th and 83rd avenues began in fall 2009 and is expected to be completed in spring 2011. Both segments are funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.
When complete, the project will add much-needed additional capacity to reduce congestion and improve travel times for motorists on Grand Avenue.
What to Expect
During construction, two lanes of traffic are expected to be maintained in each direction during daytime hours, with occasional restrictions during overnight hours. There are no full closures of Grand Avenue or the cross-streets currently anticipated for the project. If any unexpected closures are required, detours would be provided. Access to businesses and properties will be maintained during construction, although access points may change temporarily.
ADOT will provide advance notification of upcoming restrictions and closures through periodic Grand Avenue construction alerts, which will be sent when there are new restrictions to report. In addition, all current restrictions and closures will be posted on this Web site.
The speed limit on Grand Avenue will be reduced to 35 miles per hour during construction. For everyone’s safety, please drive safely, follow all posted construction speed limits and signs. Please see our Work Zone Safety Fact Sheet for more information about driving safely in construction zones.
