PHOENIX — Work to build the Valley's next multi-level freeway-to-freeway interchange connecting Loop 303 and Interstate 10 in Goodyear is scheduled to begin in November, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.
The $133 million project will include construction of elevated ramps to provide direct links between I-10 and Loop 303 and a slight realignment of I-10 as it travels beneath the new interchange, which is scheduled to open to traffic by mid-2014.
The State Transportation Board approved the award of a project contract to Pulice Construction, Inc., of Phoenix.
The new Loop 303/I-10 Traffic Interchange will connect with improved six-lane segments of Loop 303 that also will be under construction between Thomas Road and Grand Avenue over the next two-and-a-half years. The project is part of the Maricopa Association of Governments' 20-year Regional Transportation Plan approved by voters in 2004.
Major I-10 widening completed
The upcoming launch of the interchange's construction follows a major series of projects that began in 2008 to reconstruct and widen I-10 between Loop 101 and Verrado Way. More than $130 million in I-10 upgrades have transformed the busy freeway from four lanes to 10 lanes at its widest section west of Loop 101. Bridges have been widened, interchange ramps reconstructed and High Occupancy Vehicle lanes added between Loop 101 and Sarival Avenue. ADOT worked with MAG and local communities in finalizing funding for the work, part of which included federal stimulus funds.
The following is an overview of the three now-completed I-10 widening projects:
- I-10 Widening between Loop 101 and Sarival Avenue: $81 million project included the addition of two new left lanes in both directions – including High Occupancy Vehicle lanes. Work started in February 2008 and was completed in December 2009
- I-10 Additional Widening between Dysart Road and Sarival Avenue: $31 million project included adding new right lanes plus widening bridges in this area. Work started in November 2009 and was completed in August 2011.
- I-10 Widening between Sarival Avenue and Verrado Way: $22 million Stimulus-funded project included adding new third lanes in each direction. Work began in September 2009 and was completed in August 2011.
Other upcoming improvements along I-10
Another near-term I-10 improvement project is currently undergoing final design and is scheduled to start construction next year. A new interchange will be built at Perryville Road, adding more freeway access options in the area of the new Loop 303/I-10 interchange.
