Current Studies

US 60 (Grand Avenue) Feasibility Study
Loop 303 to Loop 101

The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT), in conjunction with its local municipal partners and the Federal Highway Administration, has completed a Grand Avenue Feasibility Study to identify, evaluate and recommend improvement projects along Grand Avenue between Loop 303 and Loop 101.

This study identified, evaluated and prioritized improvements along this segment of Grand Avenue for implementation in Phase II (2011-2015) of the voter-approved Regional Transportation Plan (RTP) for Maricopa County, with an emphasis on projects that improve capacity and traffic flow. The current RTP provides $64 million in funding for “unspecified” improvements to Grand Avenue from Loop 303 to Loop 101 that are consistent with regional planning studies, including recommendations in the Grand Avenue Northwest Corridor Study, SR 303L to SR 101L (January 2003) and the Grand Avenue Major Investment Study Phase II Final Report (February 2006).

Projects being considered in the study would be in addition to the planned widening projects from Loop 303 to 99th Avenue, which are included in Phase I (2006-2010) of the RTP.

Several criteria, including public input, construction feasibility, engineering and cost factors and environmental and right-of-way impacts, were used to prioritize projects in the study.

The study recommendations have been submitted to the Maricopa Association of Governments to be evaluated for implementation in the RTP through the established MAG process. MAG regional planners are currently in discussions with ADOT and the local jurisdictions abutting this segment of Grand Avenue regarding the study and how to prioritize the recommendations in light of the downturn in sales tax funding projections. ADOT’s role will be to study, design and construct the improvements that are prioritized in the RTP.

US 60 (Grand Avenue) Improvements
Loop 101 to McDowell Road

ADOT is currently in the process of preparing engineering design plans and construction documents for improvements to US 60 (Grand Avenue) from Loop 101 to McDowell Road.

The improvements were the result of a Design Concept Report and environmental study, which recommended additional improvements not already included in the planned widening projects from Loop 303 to 83rd Avenue, which are included in Phase I (2006-2010) of the Regional Transportation Plan (RTP) for Maricopa County.

During the study, ADOT worked closely with the community and its city and county partners to help prioritize projects along these segments of Grand Avenue based on the available funding, which is available in Phase II (2011-2015) of the Regional Transportation Plan.

Please see the following for information about the proposed Grand Avenue improvements in each city:
